Located on a humble side street on the north side of Chicago St. Demetrios Church has served the Greek Orthodox Community in a humble manner for the past 80 years serving to the needs of over 650 stewards. A Greek Cultural Center, the George P. Kokalis library, gymnasium, and massive auditorium were established in the early 1960’s and served as a gateway for thousands of immigrants from Greece to the new world.
St. Demetrios has many active and vibrant auxiliary organizations and is home to the Ladies Philoptochos Society, whose philanthropic efforts have benefited the Greek Community. Active organizations serving young and old exist today including, the “Young at Heart” senior citizen groups, GOYA, YAL, YP, Mom’s & Tot’s, an athletic league, along with the Greek School, and Religious Education Programs.
Our community has been sheparded over the last 12 years by Rev. Fr. Apostolos N. Georgiafentis, and is currently assisted by Rev. Fr. Peter J. Sarolas.
Saint Demetrios has married over 2,900 couples, baptized over 7,000 children, and buried over 3,000 faithful.
